To celebrate the 139th anniversary of Karenni National Day on the 21st June 2014, Our  SDC students participated in a march through the refugee camp. They carried an SDC banner and marched alongside a number of other organizations including the IRC. There were also students from the high school and middle school. On March 8th 2014, we held a joint women's day celebration with KNWO and WSP. At this celebration, there was debating and the students participated in an event about the important issue of women's rights. The event was held in Karenni Refugee Camp 1. Archived 2013: 4th Advanced Community Management Training Course Graduation

On the 10th December, 2013, we celebrated the International Human rights Day and the graduation ceremony of the 4th Advanced Community Management Training Course at the SDC campus. Before the ceremony, we held competitions for articles, poems, arts and songs related to human rights issues and we held a volleyball competition for the SDC students. During the ceremony around 100 people attended including the parents of the students, some leaders of the CBOs and Camp leaders. During the ceremony, the SDC Coordinator, Aung Sun Myint, gave a speech to the audience about the reasons for the ceremony of the international human rights day and the 4th Advanced Community Management Training Course. Furthermore, SDC advisor, Khu Oo Reh gave a speech of encouragement to the students and to the audience. The Coordinator of Earth Rights Burma, Khin Nar Dar, came from Chiang Mai to give a speech of encouragement to the students and audience too. ...

Trainings on the constitution, democracy and governments

In February 2014, our alumni inside completed their inside trainings. In our 2013- 2014 school year, we conducted three trainings on the constitution.  The trainers were SDC alumni: Gay Gorio, Na Ree, Aye Aung and Saw Maung.   35 local villagers attended each of the trainings. The first training was in Pruso; the second was in Demoso (LeeWoo); the final training was in Demoso (Kwaingei). Each project required substantial on the ground planning because of the unpredictable situation inside Karenni State.   Our alumni planned and organised the projects by firstly informing the village heads of their intentions to run trainings. This was important in order to get permission and enable people to attend. The trainings were on the subjects of democracy, government, human rights and the rule of law.   During the trainings, the feedback from participants was that the knowledge was useful. Before starting our class the new students had to repair their dormitory and classes because our buildings are made of natural materials such as dry leaves for roofing and bamboo for buildings. Usually, at the beginning of the rainy season, the weather is windy and there is very heavy rain so, we have to prevent the problem of flooding which could damage our buildings in camp. Archived 2014: Basic Course Graduation Ceremony

On 29th March, 2014, we held our SDC 11th graduation ceremony at the SDC campus in camp#1. During the ceremony, there were over one hundred people in attendance, including students, parents, their guardians, some leaders from the CBOs and camp leaders.   In recognition, on the graduation day we certified 33 students, who had successfully completed the Human Rights, Environment, Rule of Law and Democracy basic Course at Karenni Social Development Center from June 2013 to March 2014. We awarded some prizes to the 3 students who got the 1st, 2nd and 3rd among the 33 students. One further student was chosen as the best student and awarded among the 33 students. During the ceremony, one male and one female student were chosen and awarded a social prize. SDC coordinator, Aung Sun Myint, and the director of the Karenni Education Department, Khu Bu Reh, gave encouragement speeches to the audience respectively....

Research and Campaign Regarding the Dam Development Project In Karenni State

The Inside Program was conducted in May 2012.  SDC conducted research regarding the dam development project in Karenni State.  The damming of Salween River has caused environmental degradation and forced displacement over the past decades, and has been the cause of violent conflicts.  The current dam project funded by Chinese investors continues to ignore environmental consequences, and will adversely affect the local population.  After researching the current situation, SDC published a report to draw attention of the environmental issues.
