World Refugee Day Celebration

On 20th June 2014, our students were involved in the world refugee day celebrations in Karenni Refugee Camp 1. The UNHCR requested for our students to help them to implement their activities on that day. Some of our students helped prepare an exhibition about the activities of various organizations and our Karenni culture. At the ceremony, organizations shared brochures as well as seeds and vegetables. Our students helped run games and competitions for the audience. The winners of the competitions were awarded with some prizes by the UNHCR. During the ceremony, there was a big audience. There were over 400 people including children and parents. Karenni National Day Celebration 2014

To celebrate the 139th anniversary of Karenni National Day on the 21st June 2014, Our  SDC students participated in a march through the refugee camp. They carried an SDC banner and marched alongside a number of other organizations including the IRC. There were also students from the high school and middle school. On March 8th 2014, we held a joint women's day celebration with KNWO and WSP. At this celebration, there was debating and the students participated in an event about the important issue of women's rights. The event was held in Karenni Refugee Camp 1. Before starting our class the new students had to repair their dormitory and classes because our buildings are made of natural materials such as dry leaves for roofing and bamboo for buildings. Usually, at the beginning of the rainy season, the weather is windy and there is very heavy rain so, we have to prevent the problem of flooding which could damage our buildings in camp. We had the pleasure of celebrating the 10th Anniversary of SDC this year.  The celebrations were held over the course of 3 days.  From 11th to 12th November 2012, the students participated in sport competitions, as well as debates, poetry and art competitions.  We also celebrated with song and dance.  The official ceremony was held on 13th October 2012, and was attended by around 100 people, including representatives from CBOs, camp leaders and parents of students.  At the ceremony, according to their services 8 staff members including an advisor who has been working at the SDC until to day were awarded some prizes and as in recognition they were certified with a certificate of each. The winners of the competitions of the Arts, sports, songs and debates were announced and awarded some prizes prepared by the SDC and speeches were given by prominent members of the SDC and Karenni community, including Aung Sun Myint (the coordinator and founder of SDC),...

Archived 2012: Celebration of World Environment Day and Fresher Welcome by the SDC

SDC followed a 4 day environmental protection course with World Environment Day celebrations. On 4th June 2012, the community was invited to music, poetry, and art competitions as well as debates, with environmental protection being the central theme.  A ceremony followed in the SDC compound, including a welcoming speech by Aung Sun Myint, coordinator of SDC, and a speech on the history of World Environment Day and the various activities held around the world by Khu Myar Reh, principal of SDC. The ceremony was attended by more than 100 people, including representatives from CBOs, camp leaders, and parents of students. After the ceremony, food and beverages were served to all who attended.  We also welcomed the new students who will be attending in the training course of the 2012-2013. Archived 2012: SDC Camp 1 Environment Campaign

  SDC conducted a number of events this year to highlight the environmental issues affecting Karenni State and raise awareness of the need to protect the environment.  From the last week of April to the first week of May, a 4 day course on environmental protection was conducted in Karenni Refugee Camp 1.  The course was open to youths in Karenni Refugee Camp 1 and also from the wider border area.  The purpose of the course was to raise awareness of environmental issues among the younger generation and to promote good environmental practices. As part of the course, we taught the youths to be aware of their environment, and talked about how to preserve their environment and how the environment and human communities are interrelated. We had also prepared some questions and quizzes related to environmental issues and invited the attendees to answer these questions and quizzes. Archived 2011: Graduation ceremony for 2011- 2012

Graduation Ceremony for Students of 2011-2012 On 30th March 2012, a graduation ceremony was held in camp for 28 students who successfully completed the basic 10 month training course, which started in June 2011.  The main subjects of the basic training course included human rights, environmental protection and rule of law.  Certificates were awarded to the graduates, and the Best Student Award for overall excellence in scholarship and social contributions was announced.  Prizes were also awarded for academic achievement in the final exam and also for recognition of social contribution.  The graduation ceremony was attended by over 100 people, who gathered to bear witness to the achievement of the students, including parents of current students and representatives from community based organisations (CBOs), such as Karenni Education Department (KnED), and other education organisations. The attendees of the graduation ceremony were invited to enjoy food and drinks at the SDC compound after the graduation ceremony....
