Traditional Deeku festival celebration 2014

Between September 3rd and 5th, Karenni refugees celebrated Deeku festival. The elderly leaders of our animist religion who preserve and are knowledgeable about our ethnic’s traditional ways organise our traditional festivals. They lead in predicting which days are suitable for celebrating Deeku festival. These leaders read a chicken bone on Monday 1st September. As a result of the prediction based on the chicken bone, this year the Deeku festival started on the 3rd September and ended on the 5th September. After this, people can make preparations for hosting their friends and relatives. The festival must take place within the days predicted by the chicken bone.   Deeku is celebrated by Karenni people inviting all of their relatives and guests to their homes. At their homes, they will provide food especially deeku, traditional wine and meat. Archived 2012: Celebration Ceremony of the 10th Anniversary of the SDC

We had the pleasure of celebrating the 10th Anniversary of SDC this year.  The celebrations were held over the course of 3 days.  From 11th to 12th November 2012, the students participated in sport competitions, as well as debates, poetry and art competitions.  We also celebrated with song and dance.  The official ceremony was held on 13th October 2012, and was attended by around 100 people, including representatives from CBOs, camp leaders and parents of students.  At the ceremony, according to their services 8 staff members including an advisor who has been working at the SDC until to day were awarded some prizes and as in recognition they were certified with a certificate of each. Archived 2012: 3rd Advanced Community Management Training Course

3th Advanced Community Management Training Course From 9th April 2012 to 29th September 2012, SDC and ERI joined forces to conduct the third annual Advanced Community Management Course.  This year, we received 40 applicants, and after a competitive process including a test and interview, 15 candidates were selected to undertake the course.  With the support of foreign volunteers and local staff, the students were provided with training in ESL, office management, project management and planning, advocacy & campaign, peace building, fundraising, report writing and research.  The students were also taught complex legal subjects, such as international humanitarian law and international human rights law, international criminal law, international environment law.  We were proud to celebrate the graduation of all 15 students from the third annual Advanced Community Management Course on 29th September 2012....

Archived 2011: Graduation ceremony for 2011- 2012

Graduation Ceremony for Students of 2011-2012 On 30th March 2012, a graduation ceremony was held in camp for 28 students who successfully completed the basic 10 month training course, which started in June 2011.  The main subjects of the basic training course included human rights, environmental protection and rule of law.  Certificates were awarded to the graduates, and the Best Student Award for overall excellence in scholarship and social contributions was announced.  Prizes were also awarded for academic achievement in the final exam and also for recognition of social contribution.  The graduation ceremony was attended by over 100 people, who gathered to bear witness to the achievement of the students, including parents of current students and representatives from community based organisations (CBOs), such as Karenni Education Department (KnED), and other education organisations. The attendees of the graduation ceremony were invited to enjoy food and drinks at the SDC compound after the graduation ceremony....
