We had the pleasure of celebrating the 10th Anniversary of SDC this year.  The celebrations were held over the course of 3 days.  From 11th to 12th November 2012, the students participated in sport competitions, as well as debates, poetry and art competitions.  We also celebrated with song and dance.  The official ceremony was held on 13th October 2012, and was attended by around 100 people, including representatives from CBOs, camp leaders and parents of students.  At the ceremony, according to their services 8 staff members including an advisor who has been working at the SDC until to day were awarded some prizes and as in recognition they were certified with a certificate of each. The winners of the competitions of the Arts, sports, songs and debates were announced and awarded some prizes prepared by the SDC and speeches were given by prominent members of the SDC and Karenni community, including Aung Sun Myint (the coordinator and founder of SDC),...

Archived 2012: Celebration of World Environment Day and Fresher Welcome by the SDC

SDC followed a 4 day environmental protection course with World Environment Day celebrations. On 4th June 2012, the community was invited to music, poetry, and art competitions as well as debates, with environmental protection being the central theme.  A ceremony followed in the SDC compound, including a welcoming speech by Aung Sun Myint, coordinator of SDC, and a speech on the history of World Environment Day and the various activities held around the world by Khu Myar Reh, principal of SDC. The ceremony was attended by more than 100 people, including representatives from CBOs, camp leaders, and parents of students. After the ceremony, food and beverages were served to all who attended.  We also welcomed the new students who will be attending in the training course of the 2012-2013. Archived 2012: SDC Camp 1 Environment Campaign

  SDC conducted a number of events this year to highlight the environmental issues affecting Karenni State and raise awareness of the need to protect the environment.  From the last week of April to the first week of May, a 4 day course on environmental protection was conducted in Karenni Refugee Camp 1.  The course was open to youths in Karenni Refugee Camp 1 and also from the wider border area.  The purpose of the course was to raise awareness of environmental issues among the younger generation and to promote good environmental practices. As part of the course, we taught the youths to be aware of their environment, and talked about how to preserve their environment and how the environment and human communities are interrelated. We had also prepared some questions and quizzes related to environmental issues and invited the attendees to answer these questions and quizzes. More recently, the current students completed their field research, and presented their reports on 2nd November, 2012.  Each year, students are required to conduct field research in Karenni Refugee Camp 1 and other communities on the Thai/Burma border to collect information relating to human rights, environmental protection and rule of law, depending on their interests.  The students are divided into 10 groups, and after collecting information through interviews and other means, they are required to write a report and present their findings to the class.  The 3 best reports are then chosen and translated to English. ...

Basic Training Course 2012-2013 Currently, 30 students are undertaking the basic training course, and will graduate in March 2013.  The current students were selected after the recruitment presentation in February last year, when according to the usual schedule, SDC staff went to community based organizations (CBOs) based in Karenni camps and along the Thai/Burma border such as Karenni High School, Karenni community college (KnCC), Karenni Ever Green (KEG), and Karenni Women Organization (KnWO), and gave presentations about SDC's vision, mission, objectives and activities, and distributed application forms for students to apply to attend the 2012-2013 basic training course. After the recruitment presentation, an entrance test and interview session was held in April 2012 according to SDC procedure. 96 applicants sat the entrance test on 20th April, and after the test, the applicants were interviewed by our staff over two days. Archived 2012: 3rd Advanced Community Management Training Course

3th Advanced Community Management Training Course From 9th April 2012 to 29th September 2012, SDC and ERI joined forces to conduct the third annual Advanced Community Management Course.  This year, we received 40 applicants, and after a competitive process including a test and interview, 15 candidates were selected to undertake the course.  With the support of foreign volunteers and local staff, the students were provided with training in ESL, office management, project management and planning, advocacy & campaign, peace building, fundraising, report writing and research.  The students were also taught complex legal subjects, such as international humanitarian law and international human rights law, international criminal law, international environment law.  We were proud to celebrate the graduation of all 15 students from the third annual Advanced Community Management Course on 29th September 2012....

Graduation Ceremony for Students of 2011-2012 On 30th March 2012, a graduation ceremony was held in camp for 28 students who successfully completed the basic 10 month training course, which started in June 2011.  The main subjects of the basic training course included human rights, environmental protection and rule of law.  Certificates were awarded to the graduates, and the Best Student Award for overall excellence in scholarship and social contributions was announced.  Prizes were also awarded for academic achievement in the final exam and also for recognition of social contribution.  The graduation ceremony was attended by over 100 people, who gathered to bear witness to the achievement of the students, including parents of current students and representatives from community based organisations (CBOs), such as Karenni Education Department (KnED), and other education organisations. Volunteer Experience By Lynette Nam In 2012, the long running conflict in Burma finally appears to be nearing its end.  An ongoing series of political, economic and administrative reforms undertaken by the military-backed government in Burma in the past two years has buoyed hopes that the decades of violence and international isolation could soon be in the past.  In this climate of hope and optimism, it may be easy to overlook the tens of thousands of refugees displaced on the Thai/Burma border.  Look beyond the news headlines, and it is all too clear that the recent developments, while promising, have not filtered through to all the ethnic states, where clashes between Burmese troops and local insurgents continue to disrupt the pace of life.
